Edit: for those after a narrative and Corto Maltese, the journey starts here:

/Edit

Hi y'all! Long time no see.

I have the incredible luxury to have 2 months (now 1.5) free of any commitment. I want to use them to set myself up to be the best possible version of me.

The two first weeks were filled with rest and recovery. No pressure whatsoever, just letting the previous stress go away. It seems to have beared results and we are now entering phase 2 of the plan. Phase 2 requires action.

Targets:

By the end of October, I want:

  • to have decluttered my current home;
  • to have done mandatory repairs in my current home;
  • to have the building permit for my future home ready or in a good way to be;
  • to have a budget for the renovation works required on my future home;
  • to have finally filled my 2023 tax declaration (don't ask);
  • to be exercising regularly, a.k.a. 3x/week, without cheating (no butchering of the exercises for the sake of wanting to be done with them quicker);
  • to be going outside daily for a walk of 1h on rest days, at least 10min on workout days;
  • to be cooking delicious meals with joy;
  • to be eating enough and regularly;
  • to have practiced my engineering skills in order to be up to date when my new job begins;
  • to have met with the friends I enjoy and the professional contacts I want to keep in order to develop my support network and actual reach;
  • to have explored whether I want to develop a professional activity as a mountain leader and to have set the steps to get there if so;
  • to have my finances in order with expenses known and in check, investments planned for the future and tracking documents compact and ready.

Actions

General principles:

  • whenever I do something, do it fully and affirmatively. The job is done when things are cleaned, stored and ready for their next use. This include myself: shower in the morning, brushing my teeth and flossing 1/day are mandatory.

Home:

  • declutter 1h/day until all is done. Each item gets classified between:
    • Immediately needed -> find a specific place for it in my home; this is where it should always be put back directly after use;
    • Needed on the longer term -> put in a box and stored at my parents' house in order to make room inside my home;
    • Not needed at all -> given or thrown away, depending on its state.
  • once that is done, tackle the repairs.
  • contact on architect on Monday, September 16th, send them the documents for the new home, set the steps to get everything ready for the building permit.

Finances:

  • fill my taxes on Sunday September 15th;
  • keep accounting of my finances every evening;
  • spend time consolidating my financial spreadsheet 1/week.

Exercise:

  • go out for a walk early in the morning;
  • perform a full body stats, progress photos and form check on Sunday, September 15th and send them to my coach;
  • perform my planned workouts on the planned workout days fully and intentionally.

Cooking/eating:

  • don't put pressure on myself in regards to the time when I cook/eat;
  • plan my meals by watching youtube videos and collecting tricks and cooking moves;
  • practice the cooking moves I'm getting from the videos by giving myself leeway for freestyle when cooking;
  • put the highest priority on cooking and eating breakfast every day;
  • batch cook 5 meals every 5 days.

Engineering:

  • read and practice 1h/day;
  • spend time smoothening my database and working documents 1/week.

Socializing:

  • spend time consolidating and completing my contacts database 1/week.
  • get in touch with 1 friend/group of friends every two weeks until all have been recontacted;
  • have a drink with 1 important professional contact per month;
  • organize a get together for my friends for May 2025;
  • organize a get together for my professional network for Septembre 2025.

Mountain leader:

  • go out on hikes 1/2weeks;
  • dig out the requirements to get the diploma that allows professional practice;
  • build a website for my practice;
  • build a plan to meet the requirements leading to the diploma.

Schedule

Weeks Start on Sundays and end on Saturdays.

Week 1:

I am currently spending way too much time on good ole original Baldur's Gate 1 (in its original engine, none of those silly using the BG2 engine shenanigans). I don't intend to use energy to change that but rather to build a routine around it.

Sunday, September 15th:

  • go out for a 20 min walk;
  • take body measurements;
  • cook burger for breakfast; eat breakfast;
  • shower, brush teeth, floss;
  • go to my workout trail; record form checks;
  • go to my future new home; take progress pictures;
  • buy already prepped food (sandwiches or the like); eat it;
  • fill my taxes;
  • play Baldur's Gate while listening to 30' long videos. In between videos, declutter 1 bag worth of clutter;
  • batch cook lemon chicken: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZdaEdo73cs; eat.
  • prepare architects phone numbers, a baseline of what I want to tell them and the draft of the follow up email with the documents I want to send them;
  • practice engineering;
  • fill my financial accounting spreadsheet;
  • go to bed by 10 pm.

Monday, September 16th:

  • cook burger for breakfast; eat breakfast;
  • shower, brush teeth, floss;
  • go out for a 1h walk;
  • call architects; send follow up emails;
  • play Baldur's Gate while listening to 30' long videos. In between videos, declutter 1 bag worth of clutter;
  • reheat lemon chicken; eat;
  • practice engineering;
  • fill my financial accounting spreadsheet;
  • go to bed by 10 pm.

Tuesday, September 17th:

  • go out for a 20 min walk;
  • cook burger for breakfast; eat breakfast;
  • brush teeth, floss;
  • go out and practice workout;

  • from 5 pm on: consolidate my contacts database;
  • reheat lemon chicken; eat;
  • practice engineering;
  • fill my financial accounting spreadsheet;
  • go to bed by 10 pm.

Wednesday, September 18th:

  • cook burger for breakfast; eat breakfast;

@Yuen Thanks! I don't expect to pull a 100% but I do need to sort myself out if I want to move forward successfully.

The bottom line is: I don't allow myself to feel well. I'll have to identify what I can do and work on that.

Speaking of which, these two days have not been a resounding success:

* getting my scale back and it working took me yesterday and this morning, body stats haven't been done yet.

* in the meantime, I have sacrificed breakfast for the sake of "I will make it".

* progress pictures and form checks suffered from the same "it's too complicated" syndrom and haven't been made.

* couldn't muster the will to call the architect today.

* Sleep time has been sacrificed yesterday to get the batch cooking done.

* Engineering isn't set up yet.

On the other hand:

* Batch cooking has been done. I'm not very fond of the recipe and am not adding it to my classics.

* Taxes have been filed.

* Decluttering is moving forward.

* Morning routine is falling into place.

* Financial accounting routing is doing the same.

@Laghail Welcome aboard!

It's a mindset challenge but it is mostly geared toward action. I may find a way to summarize my goals in a more digest way before the end.

I seem to have been too optimistic for the first week. It's not a problem, I'll track things properly and adjust for week 2 if necessary.

I sacrificed sleep for decluttering because the electrician came today to change the meter. Decluterring is all but done at this point. Next phase will be cleaning and boy do I need a cleaning routine. This is none of my suits, strong or otherwise so I'm calling out all cleaners out there:

If you have a specific cleaning routine, I'm interested to know it.

In the mean time, I'll search on Youtube channels as per my usual.

I'm pretty much drained for the day. I'm giving myself full leeway and expect not much to be done.

Decluttering is officially off the list. Batch cooking has been pushed to tomorrow since I still had one meal left for today due to cooking something else during the week.

Wow, you have a lot going on. I am impressed with how you are putting your interim time to good use.

I am not sure I am the best source on cleaning. I can give recommendations on how to clean specific things, but I don't have a system as such.

One piece of advice: If you touch an item to do something with it, put it where it needs to go. Don't just set it back down for later. If you have a big house, you might have a box by the stairs to collect things that need to go up or down so that you can consolidate trips. I am a strong advocate of deal with it now so it does not go on my list for later.

A resource you may find helpful is https://www.unfuckyourhabitat.com/. Some of the advice there is geared towards people  who are really struggling, which is not you. Just ignore that part and see if their cleaning routines work for you.

I understand why you'd write that but when it comes to cleaning, hygiene and, on a general basis, self care, I should be considered at the level of 'really struggling'. I've browsed through the site, Unfuck Your Habitat seems to be exactly what I need. Big thanks for the link!

Week 1 assessment:

* Architect contact has been made. I've called them and since they didn't answer, sent an email. I'll be able to repeat the process at the end of next week with another one if they don't reply by then.

* Taxes have been filed.

* Decluttering has been made. Thanks to @Mistr, I now have a plan for the cleaning part.

* Fitness progress assessment hasn't been achieved and seems to be out of reasonable reach for now.

* Walking and hygiene habits have set in.

* Eating habit requires work.

* Sleeping habit requires work too.

* Financial accounting habit has set in. I'm on target for this month's expenses.

* It is too early to press myself to go above and beyond and reach goals like engineering or consolidating my stuff.

I'm going to assume I'll hit the bedtime mark tonight:

After the disappointment of my taste buds last time, I needed to go for something reliably delicious for my batch cooking. I went for a couscous (video in French), replacing the various meats by a whole chicken:

Program for next week:

I will take that week easy with very few specific tasks. The background habits remain to be followed.

Points of interest:

* I have an alumni meeting with old classmates on Sunday. That counts as social activity.

* Taking account of the weather forcasts, hiking should happen on Wednesday. The day may change depending on the actual weather.

Managed to work around my "There's only 2 hours left so I don't have time to follow my routine" vicious circle to do my walk this morning, but forego the workout thinking I'd get it done after the meetup since my favorite training ground is very near to where it took place. As could be expected, alcohol and late meetup ending played into me using the rain as an excuse and not doing the workout at all.

The biggest voctory is that I did go to the meetup, despite my morning reluctance to it, and we had a good time.

I am always interested in hearing about the recipes you try. I have a few standard things I cook a lot. I could use more variety.

I usually also revolve around a few meals myself but chances are my mundane isn't your mundane. The recipes I'm likely to use this challenge will come as Youtube videos, with the ingredients or a link to them usually in the description.

As could be expected, the couscous is delicious. Make couscous, folks! The only other meal with as much magic that I know is slow cooked delicious stew. I'll keep that one in reserve for when I need the emotional support or don't want to afford the risk of my meals being untasty.

3 things I take out of the couscous recipe:

1) as mentioned before, it's delicious. Highly recommended.

2) when the recipe calls for low grade chili pepper, don't use strong 'piment d'Espelette' in the same quantity.

3) when the recipe mentions being for 10 people, that doesn't mean 5 tupperwares for 1 person. Basic maths apply to cooking, champion!

I often have to fight myself to go to social gatherings, and I almost always come away glad I went having enjoyed myself.

It happens to me with social gatherings, exercising and other things though not always. It's always still an assessment about whether I really need alone time and a total lack of pressure or if I would gain from these gatherings. Having had time to start recovery and plenty of time for more of it, it would not be honest of me to pretend I can't handle those events when they do benefit me so the balance is set toward going out and meeting people for now.

Welcome! The plan may be too ambitious but we're starting slow and we'll gear up from there.

Speaking of which, I didn't manage to go on a hike today, event though the weather was lovely. One thing I tend to lack is focus. My mind starts wandering around all the things that "need" be done and I end up doing a bit of several of them but not carry them through meaningful results. To try to keep that in check this challenge, I'm instituting a divide between 'core' tasks and 'reach' ones. My goals for the coming days is to consistently score 100% on the core part, without focus on the stretch one.

I'm still pondering whether the batch cooking should be in the core tasks or not. I feel that would make too many of them and loose the benefit of consolidating those tasks into that block but it remains very important. The actual goal is sufficient and diverse eating, though, and that can be reached by other means if I don't deny myself the ability to eat healthily just because I didn't batch cook my meals.

Legally bound to hug people in need.

Living life as a Druid is about walking with the beasts. It's about being scared, looking your fears in the eyes and going on anyway. Dread doesn't go away, you just learn to know it. It's still a beast, it still has fangs, but you walk among it.

2) when the recipe calls for low grade chili pepper, don't use strong 'piment d'Espelette' in the same quantity.

3) when the recipe mentions being for 10 people, that doesn't mean 5 tupperwares for 1 person. Basic maths apply to cooking, champion!

2) if the recipe calls for low grade chili pepper, then the recipe doesn't know spicy, so definitely use strong 'piment d'Espelette' in the same quantity instead. ?

If you're anything like me, at least... If it's for the family, then even the low grade chili pepper will be too spicy. Which is exactly why I have Carolina Reaper flakes and Carolina Reaper-based hot sauce in the house at all times... ?

3) recipes can be bad at basic math too. I've had recipes for 4 people being insufficient for 2, and vice versa. I see nothing wrong with a 10 people recipe being 5 tupperwares for 1 person. ?

I've seen it both ways. Sometime you run the numbers on a recipe and it's like 250kcal per serving, and that's not a meal quite frankly. Other times you're looking at a recipe going 'you want me to add how much rice??'

Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel.
