miss_marissa
From the Book Riot site: Just as in years past, there are 24 tasks, averaging two per month over the course of the next 12 months. You may count one book for multiple tasks or read one book per task. We’ll say it again: “We encourage you to push yourself, to take advantage of this challenge as a way to explore topics or formats or genres that you otherwise wouldn’t try. But this isn’t a test. No one is keeping score and there are no points to post. We like books because they allow us to see the world from a new perspective, and sometimes we all need help to even know which perspectives to try out. That’s what this is—a perspective shift—but one for which you’ll only be accountable to yourself.” Read a YA nonfiction book Read a retelling of a classic of the canon, fairytale, or myth by an author of color Read a mystery where the victim(s) is not a woman Read a graphic memoir Read a book about a natural disaster Read a play by an author of color and/or queer author Read a historical fiction novel not set in WWII Read an audiobook of poetry Read the LAST book in a series Read a book that takes place in a rural setting Read a debut novel by a queer author Read a memoir by someone from a religious tradition (or lack of religious tradition) that is not your own Read a food book about a cuisine you’ve never tried before Read a romance starring a single parent Read a book about climate change Read a doorstopper (over 500 pages) published after 1950, written by a woman Read a sci-fi/fantasy novella (under 120 pages) Read a picture book with a human main character from a marginalized community Read a book by or about a refugee Read a middle grade book that doesn’t take place in the U.S. or the UK Read a book with a main character or protagonist with a disability (fiction or non) Read a horror book published by an indie press Read an edition of a literary magazine (digital or physical) Read a book in any genre by a Native, First Nations, or Indigenous author A handful of us have participated the past few years and logged our progress, shared suggestions, and reviews in this thread. Feel free to join us! In the book riot site there are links to suggestions for each of the topics, you can also find lists in Goodreads as well typically. There aren't really any rules, just do the best you can. SMintYoongi
I'm definitely going to participate in this! I've wanted to broaden my reading for a long time, so this will probably help me choose what I can read to do this. I have already picked out my tbr for January and most of February, so there probably won't be a lot of books that'll fulfill any of the prompts during these months - however, I will see whether any of the books I've picked out fits into one of the categories. Mad Hatter
Following for book recommendations! I won't be attempting the challenge this year as last year's attempt ended up in several DNRs, there are just some genres that I don't care for. But I loved getting book recommendations from authors/genres outside my default zone and try new things, so I'll do some cherry picking. 3 Quote Link to comment

CourtnieMarie
1. Read a YA nonfiction book – Between the World and Me (Read) 17. Read a sci-fi/fantasy novella (under 120 pages) – How the Marquis Got His Coat Back (Read) I really enjoyed Between the World and Me and it's very short. It definitely pulled at all my feels and taught me some things I didn't know. highly recommend quick read. I listened to the BBC radioplay of Marquis which was cute. A good way to come down after the other one. I'm currently reading Turtle All the Way Down which I didn't realize was YA, so it's got your typical high school romance aspects but I'm enjoying it so far. The descriptions of thoughts and thought processes in a highly anxious person are illuminating. The Duchess War - I picked up a boxset of Courtney Milan a while back and started reading it finally once all the RWA nonsense went down. It was alright. I don't read much romance, so I don't have much to compare it to. 11. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - LOVED this one TBH. Can't wait to dig into the other books in the series. It was very character driven, and not much plot driven. Loved this adventure and the team though. 14. Sleepless - read vol 1 in 2019 and finally got around to vol 2. Was a lovely read. I enjoyed the characters and the worldbuilding quite a bit. (Please send me all your space adventures with ragtag crews. TYVM.) I'm not sure I will finish, as I've prioritized reading books already on my shelf this year. I loved Between the World and Me, Turtles, and The Hero of Ages. It took me some time to get into Hero but it's definitely worth the slog in the beginning! I want to name my next dog after one of the characters actually... I've started to prioritize books that have been on my TBR list by black authors so not sure how far I'll get on this list. hope everyone is well! 1 Quote Instagram | pinterest read harder challenge | Battle Log | NROLFW Challenges: 13-1 | 13-2 | 13-3 | 13-3.5 | 14-1 | 14-2 | 15-1 | 15-2 | 15-3 | 15-4 | 15-5 | 16-1 | 16-2 | 16-3 | 16-4 | 16-5 | 16-6 | 16-7 | 16-8 | 17-1 | 17-2 | 17-3 | 17-4 | 17-5 | 17-6 | 17-7 | 17-8 | 17-9 | 17-10 | 18-1 | 18-2 | 18-3 | 18-4 | 18-5 | 18-6 | 18-7 | 18-8 | 18-9 | 18-10 | 19-1 | 19-2 | 19-3 | 19-4 | 19-5 | 19-6 | 19-7 | current Link to comment

It's disappointingly short so just remember that and that there are two more in the series [edited: Looking back at your list I realized you've already read Binti haha! how'd you like it?] Nice! I did like it! I though it was a cute story, I think I would have liked an additional maybe 50%. Have your read the sequels? I saw the second is about 1 year later, and I'm not quite sure how I feel about that. How did you enjoy Fun Home? Alison Bechdel is great, but that book can be a bit heavy. I just read the second one actually. it was good! It's a continuation of the story and more about her little device (the name of which escapes me pre-coffee). it's not one of those stories that's going to take you through the day to day lives of students going through classes and what they ate for lunch if you know what I mean. but it kept me engaged and then disappointed again when it was over ? 16 hours ago, miss_marissa said: How did you enjoy Fun Home? It was so fun and the author did well wrapping up the trilogy. Refugee - I loved this one. It was sad and definitely pulled at my heartstrings but I learned a lot that I didn't know and it was well-written. The Night Diary - I also really liked this one. Another tear jerker where I learned a lot that either I forgot from grade school or was never taught about. The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires - I had issues with this one... It was a cool/new take on vampires for sure but there were sexist and racist issues I couldn't over look. It's not that it's overtly either of those -ists, it just gives itself huge opportunities to address those issues and didn't. 2 Quote Instagram | pinterest read harder challenge | Battle Log | NROLFW Challenges: 13-1 | 13-2 | 13-3 | 13-3.5 | 14-1 | 14-2 | 15-1 | 15-2 | 15-3 | 15-4 | 15-5 | 16-1 | 16-2 | 16-3 | 16-4 | 16-5 | 16-6 | 16-7 | 16-8 | 17-1 | 17-2 | 17-3 | 17-4 | 17-5 | 17-6 | 17-7 | 17-8 | 17-9 | 17-10 | 18-1 | 18-2 | 18-3 | 18-4 | 18-5 | 18-6 | 18-7 | 18-8 | 18-9 | 18-10 | 19-1 | 19-2 | 19-3 | 19-4 | 19-5 | 19-6 | 19-7 | current Link to comment
