Get To Da Choppa: Pull-up PvP [Aug 13 - Sept 9 ]

Did several sets of chin ups, some ring rows, some scap pull, and then finished with some dead hangs. The dead hangs were my weakest. I really need to do those more often. I could barely do 3 sets of 20 secs, I used to be able to do a minute.

OMG! Of course I've seen it :D :D! Maybe I've watched it like 4-5 times too, who knows?! LOL. I really hope it becomes a thing because Nathan Fillion is amazingly perfect for that role! I've always seen him as Nathan Drake ever since I first started playing the series many years ago.

First day hitting the grind.

Did band assisted pull ups as part of my circuit (I add them into 5x5 instead of OHP).

 

Sooo weak compared to where I was.  I hateses it, lol!  But I am going to just look for progress through this PVP!

Managed 26 total across 5 sets.  [8,8,4,3,3]

 

(also, weird... one of the other guys I work with started working out in the whse this week... I had to share my space with him.   I am not a fan... but I can't really do anything about it)

2 sets of 12 dumbell rows yesterday morning for 48 points (assuming that 12 left and 12 right counts for 12 total, otherwise that would be 96).

 

Dida pullup session yesterday evening:

Deadhangs from rock grips - 6 x 15 seconds - 4 points

Scap pulls from rock grips - 2 x 12 and 2 x 8 - 80 points

Pull ups - 5, 5, 4, 4, 4 - 66 points

Alternating chin-ups and hammer-ups - 5, 3, 5, 2.5, 3.5, 2.5 - 69 points (I counted the halfs as 2 points each)

 

Total for Monday: 267 points.

I was going to GtG today... but yesterday was my first workout back in a few weeks off, after having done just 2 workouts after a whole month off....

Finally got a pull workout in.  Question regarding scoring: How are dragon lifts counted (if at all)?  I would think they would be pull exercises because they are using similar muscles/actions, but maybe they should be assisted because not all of the bodyweight is being pulled up?  

 

Please provide some adjudication, thanks :)

The full name is the armstrong pullup program. It's a pull up program big with the military/police types. It's based in 4 different activities over 5 days a week. Things like max rep day, max set day, variety day, etc. It's a lot of work but really produces results.

Basically I hang them from the pullup bar to use rather than the bar for a bit of grip training variety.

 

Hammer-ups are my made up word for something I don't know the name of. Basically my pull-up bar is this shape:   - ¦ - - ¦ - 

I call a pullup gripping the outside two, palms away from me:   m ¦ - - ¦ m

I call a chinup gripping the middle two, palms facing towards me:   - ¦ w w ¦ - 

I call a hammer-up gripping the middle bits, palms facing inwards:   - E - - Э -

Do you have a picture/gif of the move? Looking at Dragon Lifts on Google gives me Dragon Flags which I don't think is what you mean?

Yes, like a dragon flag but without the static hold part.  going from laying on my back grabbing something overhead (in my case a bar as if I'm doing a horizontal pullup). then pulling my body up into the air so only my hands and shoulder blades are touching, and then lowering again for 1 rep. I think they are also called hollow body lifts?

Ah, I see what you mean now. I'd probably call those assistance personally as they're closeish to inverted rows. See what everyone else thinks though.

 

EDIT: They also sound really intense by the way, so good on you for those!

Yeah, I missed yesterday as well...not starting off so hot, but I made up some ground this morning ;). Even with 2 sessions, you're still rocking it, brother!

I would agree with them being considered assistance worthy and YES, they are intense for sure. Excellent for the core ;).

 

Did a solid pull-workout today. Would the row machine (concept rower) count? I'm assuming so, but not sure how to score that?

I'll adjust my score once we get a consensus. Also, do Deadlifts count as an accessory exercise? I would think so, but once again, I want consensus from the group because that also changes my totals. Here's today's total without the row machine and deadlifts included: 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 various pull-ups  ranging from regular, chin-up, jumping and hammer = 75 pts

 

Just let me know about the rower and deadlift stuff ;)

I think it would be too hard to count, and sort of a disadvantage to people who don't have a rower. Plus there is also difficulty level. I did 40 minutes on the rower yesterday, but only a fraction of it was on a harder difficulty. That's my two cents

I kind of see your point. I would think it would only count as assistance because not everyone has access to barbells to do stuff like bent over row either. If someone only had access to a pull-up bar and nothing else then they would be at a disadvantage for working any assistance exercises. And you could log it based off meters if you did track it. Like every 500m was worth 2 points or whatever the amount of points for assistance type workouts would be. Difficulty level can't be tracked, but rowing 500m at an easy pace is still good work and there are pulling mechanism's involved with the whole thing.

 

But, again, consensus/majority rules. If we don't want to count Row machine, it's not going to hurt my feelings.

Sorry for the absence, I've been sick the last few days. 

 

I'm happy to take the majority group decision on most of the questions on adding exercises.

Dragon holds, I'd put as accessory.

Rower, hmm. I'm leaning towards not including it more for the complexity of logging than anything.

Deadlifts. I went back and forth on including this and left it off to keep the challenge more about 'typical' pull up exercises. But I'm happy for a group decision on this.
