Do any of you have a favorite line from a favorite book that you love getting to that line because you know you are settling into your happy place?  Sort of the "In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit" sort of thing?  Mine is: "But there was fresh orange juice everyday" (The Blue Sword).  A simple statement -- not one that should* engender dreams of magic and adventure -- but I sigh with contentment whenever I read it.

Hmmmm.

The first thing that comes to mind is: "The adults are wrong, and their younglings are right" from the Revenge of the Sith novelization Introduction.

The second thing that comes to mind is: "Crowley (An Angel who did not so much Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downwards)" from Good Omens' Dramatis Personae list.

"I am no man" - Eowyn.

Despite the dire and tragic situation she is in during that short conversation, that line always make me smile a little. :)

“I've always believed that failure is non-existent. What is failure? You go to the end of the season, then you lose the Super Bowl. Is that failing? To most people, maybe. But when you're picking apart why you failed, and now you're learning from that, then is that really failing? I don't think so." - Kobe Bryant, 1978-2020. Rest in peace, great warrior.

Reading is still hard. I've made it about 1/3 of the way through Wizards at War by Diane Duane (which is a reread for me) in 2+ months. I did convince a friend to read this series though, and watching her reactions is fun!

And so my pitch: If you love both science and magic, don't mind reading YA and want to fight for good in the universe, check out So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane. It is honestly the nerdiest of magic. The first book was published in 1983, which gives the setting a nostalgic feeling now.

Today is Read an eBook Day. I will of course to exactly that. :)

Also, for any Reading Thread nerds who pay for Kindle Unlimited in the US, Amazon has added the entire TheThree Body Problem series to their catalog.

I recently found out that the 2007 movie The Last Mimzy was based on a scifi short story from 1943. (The base concept itself takes ideas from Alice in Wonderland.)

I am always very interested on how ideas and stories have evolved over time. I managed to track down the 1943 short story: "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" by Lewis Padgett. For anyone interested in finding it these days, it's in The Road to Science Fiction Volume 3: From Heinlein to Here edited by James Gunn.

I haven't had a chance to read it yet; I'm hoping to get there in the next week. I'm thinking it might be time to fully embrace this path and finally read the original Alice in Wonderland books after this.

Does anyone else like tracing stories through time?

Been a while since I posted here, becuase it's been a while since I read anything other than PhD things.

This past week, I discovered the delightful Thursday Murder Club,  and spent some time with it all week long. I finished it last night, and I'm looking forward to reading the next set in the series, probably starting that this evening if I finish the PhD essays this afternoon.
