MasterOfCows Posted July 31, 2014 Report Share Posted July 31, 2014 I absolutely loved the Wheel of Time Series, I believe the only downfall to it ends up being what you call the fluff. The only thing I dislike about Robert Jordan's writing style is that he over-describes things. Its really awesome for author's to go into intricate detail about some things, but I think Mr. Jordan went a little overboard with that some times.The first 4 (maybe 5) books were great. I struggled through the middle ones, largely due to the over description, and I'm a sucker for detailed descriptions. The last 3 books were awesome as well. If you can make it through the middle ones, you'll enjoy it. If you can make it through the middle ones, you'll enjoy it. I'm not sure if I just have over-fond memories of Lord of the Rings, but the escape from the Shire to the Prancing Pony and then the terror-filled sprint to Rivendell seemed to go by really fast in the books. Right now, The Dark One and his minions (Trollocs and others) are chasing Rand, Perrin, and Mat but I don't know why. If I don't find out WHY these boys are so important, or at least some other clues to the story, I'll start losing interest. It's fun to read adventure and escape, but only for so long. "The Lies of Locke Lamora"Loving it so far. Also about 1/2 way through "The Arms of Krupp" which is basically a biography of a German weapons (and other stuff) manufacturing family - the "head" of the family at the time was tried at Nuremburg. Very well written. I'm a sucker for WWII stuff.Just finished Mark Lawrence's Prince, King and Emperor of Thorns (3 books) - These were fantastic. The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett was also pretty good, I'll probably continue on with the series. The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks - I'm not sure how I felt about this one. Malice by John Gwynne - overwhelming meh. Arcacia: The War with the Mein by David Anthony Durham. Loved it. Have the 2nd book waiting for me. Reading "Not a good day to die" - An interesting book about Operation Anaconda. Hand in hand with this is the third Legacy of the Force book (the name escapes me), which is basically my candy for the brain read. I dug out Chuck Pahlinuk's "Haunted" from it's hiding place, but couldn't muster the courage to open its pages again. Had been reading Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" before the summer, might have to get back to it again. The Heritage of Shannara sub-series(nostalgic for grade school days...always left the library with a nice big pile. When I was riding my bike once I got in an accident with a car...I credit my heavy backpack for making me turn to fall on on my back instead of my shoulder-which had a broken collarbone from impact with the car. If I had hit the ground with my shoulder/arm as naturally happens when falling on a bike, it couldn't have been good for my already-overlapping collarbone. So that's what I think about when I see the Shannara books. Totally fine now btw. ) Honor Bound-W.E.B. Griffin --ok fun read, a little slower at the beginning than expected. yet another military-political-action novel. need something to intersperse the epics The Navigator-Clive Cussler --got this on audiobook...soooo much slower than reading i might give up, I find self-help-y books better for listening apparently.
