I tried making some 3-ingredient oatmeal breakfast cookies (oatmeal, bananas, peanut butter). They were not a success. I was really hopeful that they'd work out because they were really easy to make, but I'm having to force myself to eat them and today I gave up after a couple of bites. Oh well.

I have eaten these. They are good for about ten minutes and then they are disgusting.? they are broken promises. They should be amazing, and then they show their true horrible glommy self ? Just reassuring you that its not you.

Day 1, I somehow managed to eat two cookies. Day 2, it was just a couple of bites. I'm going to toss the rest in the compost. Good to know I'm not alone!

I know, right? They sound like they should be fairly decent, but I found them to be bland and dense, the sort of thing you only eat when there's nothing else and you know you need calories. I feel like they either need a whole bunch of sugar (which would turn them into real cookies instead of something relatively healthy) or some combination of spices that would give them a good flavor. Probably some raisins or dried cranberries as well.

You made Elven Biscuits!!

My suggestion is to cut back on the oats (to make them less dense) and to simmer some raisins or cranberries in a liquid to release the sweetness without adding sugar. Also upping the banana content and adding a bit of vanilla might help, but these are only brainstorming ideas if you want to try the recipe again, and it sounds as though you're well and truly over it.

I love the awards and narrative after each day's encounters.

They really are great. :)

I struggle a bit with writing the narrative, both here and in the West-Marshes Adventure. It's hard not to compare myself to the folks who seem to be able to put out paragraphs easily (although I guess I don't know how long they stared blankly at the screen before hitting Submit Reply). But I'm trying. Maybe it will become easier with time.

Don't compare yourself to  others (comparison is the thief of joy)-- find the way that you would say the words to a close friend, and go with that. The way you wrote the narrative of the blackberries and the way you write up the AC and villain things works very well. Less is often more, and a short sentence or two is often enough for us to feel included and see the vision. FWIW, I think your narratives do exactly what is needed. :)

The real benefit to this recipe was that it was only three ingredients and took almost no thought to mix up. If I'm going to try again while adding ingredients and making things more complicated, I'll probably look for an entirely new recipe.

Beat me to it. This isn't a competition, not even a popularity contest. We write that stuff for ourselves, first and foremost.

I'm going to have to think about that. I don't tend to write my stories down because I find my internal monologue to be much more interesting, but memory (at least mine) isn't that reliable, especially over long periods of time, so I've lost a lot of my stories because I just don't remember all the pieces. Other people seem to be able to write stories that are interesting*, so maybe I just don't have enough practice translating my thoughts to paper.

Edit:

* And when I say that, I'm thinking more of authors who write things that I react to on an emotional level, similar to the way I do with my internal stories.

Week 1 Wednesday

Gym cardio workout on the eliptical (+10 xp), so that's a ranged attack against the Needle Blight. 17 to hit and 7 points of damage will finish off the Needle Blight (+50 xp). I also did some bouldering (+3 xp) and I did one new V3 (+2 xp). I also got a little further on another one and have an idea for something new to try on one I'm struggling to finish, but that will have to wait for another day. I did morning candle, but skipped evening candle and teeth brushing, so no short rest today.

Needle Blight 1: 0 hp

Short Rests: 2

Week 1: 88 xp

As the Needle Blight turned to flee, another arrow from her longbow finished it off. Silence descended as Hal took a moment to gather her thoughts and resumed her trek through the forest.

Nothing sad about that. There's more to life than shooting Needle Blights!

True, but I was enjoying my shiny new challenge and the general feel of excitement in the forums. Stepping back for a planned rest day is probably a good thing, even when I want to stay on the hype train.

Understandable, but no reason rest days can't be as fun as active days. "Ranger Hal settled into her bedroll and reflected back on her battle with the Needle Blight, trying to identify weaknesses she could exploit in future battles, as well as assessing her own weaknesses that could be shored up" type of thing. We can be totally hyped about rest! Rest is Awesome!!!

Week 1 Friday and Saturday

Friday evening and Saturday morning were busy with church stuff. I had planned to do a short hike on Saturday, but life and traffic got in the way. Short rest both days.

Week 1 Sunday

I packed carefully so I wouldn't have too much stuff left in my vehicle at the trailhead and could go for a 4 mile hike (+10 xp, +5 xp for favored terrain, +8 xp for distance in favored terrain) after church. I get to melee attack the next Needle Blight and as the hike was more than an hour, it's a two-weapon attack. First attack misses (11 to hit) and the second attack barely hits (12 to hit, apparently not rolling well today) for 5 damage. Also did candles and teeth brushing, so that's a short rest.

Needle Blight 2: 13 hp

Short Rests: 6

Week 1: 111 xp

As Hal continued to move through the forest, the sound of trickling water caught her ear. Following the sound to investigate, she came across a natural spring bubbling out of a rocky section of ground. It was completely overgrown, but at one time it had clearly been visited often. Below the spring, a depression had been dug and lined with stones to make it easier to collect the clear water. As she stood, studying the spring, a rustling behind her caused Hal to spin, pulling out both her short swords. Another Needle Blight was trying to sneak up behind her. Her first stab missed, but her second just found its mark as the Needle Blight dodged back out of range of her swords.

Week 2 Plan

This week, I'm planning workouts for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Weekend. Technically I could fit something on Friday as well, but I kind of like leaving that open so I can just do some bouldering for fun if I feel like it.

Very true!

Week 2 Monday

A tiring day (jury selection is not fun) but I did go to the gym for cardio afterwards (+10 xp), so that's a ranged attack. 21 to hit (I had been getting a little worried about my d20, but this roll is much better than previous ones) and 8 damage. I also got my short rest.

Needle Blight 2: 5 hp

Short Rests: 7

Week 2: 10 xp

Hal fired an arrow (a solid hit) as the Needle Blight circled behind some trees...

Week 2 Tuesday

Very relieved to have been excused from jury duty. I did not want to be on a murder trial. Again. Once was enough, thank you very much. Did a stairs workout after work (+10 xp) for a shortsword attack. 24 to hit and 9 damage which finishes off the second Needle Blight (+50 xp). Did candles and teeth, so that's a short rest as well.

Needle Blight 2: 0 hp

Short Rests: 8

Week 2: 70 xp

...and as it darted forward for an attack, a stab from her shortsword finished it off. There was something about this abandoned spring that called to Hal, but now was not the time to restore it. There were still more Needle Blights in this infestation to deal with. Resolutely, she turned her back on the spring and headed north through the trees.

Week 2 Wednesday

Gym cardio workout (+10 xp) is an attack with my longbow. 15 to hit and 11 damage (I rolled an 8 on the d8)! I also did some bouldering (+3 xp). I maybe did one new V3, but the time I got all the way to the end, I had started from the second move, so maybe I'll count it next time I do that particular one. There are a lot of new routes right now (new ones don't have a grade right away) and there don't seem to be very many V3s in the older routes at the moment, so I tried a V4 (didn't get very far, but that's okay). Also did candles and teeth for a short rest.

Needle Blight 3: 7 hp

Short Rests: 9

Week 2: 83 xp

Moving through a darker section of trees, this time, Hal spotted the Needle Blight before it saw her. She took careful aim with her longbow and fired an arrow that pierced deep between clumps of conifer-like needles.

I don't really have a concept of how bouldering grades go. Is a V4 slightly harder than V3, or significantly harder?

Well, there aren't any intermediate steps between V3 and V4, so I guess in theory it's a bit harder. But in reality, routes can contain a variety of types of holds and  require very different types of movement and there's quite a bit of variation within grades, let alone between them. One route might have nice holds that are easy to grab, but requires a big dynamic move. Another route might have tiny holds that you can barely get your fingers on, but you can move slowly and deliberately. Other routes require you to get your feet in just the right spot or you fall three inches and land on your butt (yes, I'm talking about you, yellow route that was replaced last week).

I did a V4 a while back where the hand holds were great, but the feet weren't. It's the only V4 I've finished (though I haven't tried very many). There are V3s that I can do fairly easily. There are V3s that have been replaced by new routes before I could figure out how to complete them. I can usually do V2s, but there's the occasional one that I struggle with. There are routes where I think the grade is higher than it should be because it's so easy to me, but maybe other people really struggle with those particular moves. I struggle with big dynamic moves that really require you to commit.

Also, there's variation between gyms, simply because they have different route setters who have different styles. I visited another gym once and was basically climbing a grade lower than what I would normally do in my gym. As much as they try to keep grades consistent across the sport, I think it's always going to be a bit subjective. For me, it's just helpful to know that at my gym, I can do most V2s, V3s might require some work and I may or may not finish them, and V4+ I probably won't finish, but they're still worth trying to practice doing harder moves.
