When I'm doing my negatives my triceps engage and the front of my shoulder also engages, and this is with me making sure to pull my shoulder blades down. When I try to do the chin-up from a dead hang the only height I can get is from pulling my shoulder blades down and it causes pain in the front of my shoulder. I do not feel my back or biceps or anything else engage while doing this. Can y'all help me with this? I'm not quite sure how to fix this.

I just watched a couple more videos to see if I could figure out why I'm not progressing, and I discovered my grip was not wide enough. Here is the most recent video I watched, which is full of variations and progression explanations.

Artemis, I've never really liked chin ups from dead hang for that reason, you could try changing up the width of hand placement to see if it makes it better, I think I usually go a little narrower that shoulder width myself.  It could also be that pulling from the dead hang is the hardest part.  On your negatives do you go really slow and controlled through that bottom range of motion, including releasing the shoulders from active hang to passive hang at the end?

This was me as well.  Camp + Zombie Cold.

 

I got back on the wagon yesterday.  Managed 3 full pulls (with rests between each), a negative, and then could not complete the 5th pull.  STILL!  I could only do 2 last time I checked, so clearly something I did at camp/aerial helped push this along.

I still can't do a full pull but I am working negatives like a boss. And my chin ups are almost working at dead hang now. SOON! Continuing to rep week -2. Oh week -2 old friend.... lol

Leaving negatives for the week and going back to assisted pull-ups/lat pull-downs. Four weeks straight of Week -2 and I need something different, plus taking a step back is probably a healthy thing.

I almost got one real pull up!  Almost! I can't do it from dead hang yet, but PROGRESS WOOHOO!

I just started making progress on both pull and push ups right at the end of this 6 week challenge. Bah! Well, at least I can get 2 pull ups now :)

OK so I'm vacation and was exploring the resort with my dad and we went to the fitness center to check it out. I saw the pull up bar and was like hey dad check this out and did 2 chin-ups. BAM!

So at least I'm improving on my chin ups even if I can't do 2 pull-ups 😀 I'll take it
