Finally hatched my first egg today, which I'm quite happy about. 283CP Tangela, not too shabby for a lowly level 7 ...right?

I'd say that 75% of the time I try to log in, the servers are down. -______________-  I don't know if it's because I've got a Pokemon trainer account instead of logging in with Google but I'm really getting less enthused about the game as time goes on because of not being able to, you know, play.  I don't live or work in an urban area so I've gotta make do with either after work/weekends..... which is when I can never log in!! ;_;  This past weekend I was out and about everywhere but couldn't catch a thing because 'please retry' BOOOOO NO.  Brokemon.

 

I'm headed back to the beach tomorrow morning so hoping I can log in then!!!  *crosses all fingers*

I think it's more the servers, from what I read they were expecting about a million players and they ended up with, an estimated, 15 million the first week... So the servers are getting hammered. 

 

I'm in a similar boat, I'm just taking as it comes because I have seen uptime getting better, still not perfect, but better.

Holy crap that experience curve, fam.  The progress was pretty linear to about level 20, but it scales up exponentially after that.  50k to get from 20 to 21, 75k to get from 21 to 22.  After finally turning that over, staring 100k in the face to get to 23.  (It only gets crazier after that - it's 350k from 29 to 30, and 5 million from 39 to 40).  In a way though, it's kind of liberating.  I'm sure Niantic hopes that the steepening requirements will encourage the hardcore players to spend money on lucky eggs and such to keep progressing, but it's having the exact opposite effect on me.  At that point, it's raindrops in the ocean, so who cares?  Exp is all of a sudden less important to me, and I can get back to having fun trying to fill my pokedex, which is really the point in the first place.

 I got 17 with the Tangela, but I have no idea if that's good, bad, or average...

That's why the suggestion is to wait to use stardust until around 21-23, you're not leveling very often anymore and the stardust gain from catching starts outgaining the max CP increase from leveling. The 2 further power ups you get per level on each pokemon amounts to about 5k of stardust per pokemon at level 20. 50k experience to level up means 500 catches, which nets 50k stardust. Sure, you're gonna get exp from evolving and from lucky eggs, but you should get around 20k in stardust at least between catches and hatching. Each level after that disparity grows more and more. You're also not catching a Pokémon with higher CP maxes 2-3 days later since your leveling slows down so much.

Yeah, I had figured out intuitively that spending dust early would have been wasteful, but I wasn't ever sure when to start powering up. Honestly, even though I have enough dust now that I could maintain a few maxed out 'mons, I'll probably continue to hoard. The current gym mechanics are so heavily biased towards attackers that even without powering up, there isn't a gym I can't take down. And even if I did power up, there's no gym that I'd be able to hold. The huge CP numbers are just for show. So...¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Stockpiling it is.

My son and I took over a gym this morning.  First time.  Kind of fun.   I doubt it will last as we are both relatively low level, but it was fun times anyway.

YAY I finally got some cool Pokemon from egg hatches!!  (The initial ones were all Ratata, Pidgey and Ekans...which I catch hoards of at my office!)  Today I got a Poliwag (SO CUTE OMFG) and a Pinsir. (Also got Krabby and a Magikarp which I've seen before but are pretty rare around here anyway..now to catch 400 more Magikarp and we are in business. Lolololol)

 

I also ended up on an accidental Pokewalk with a friend! I was planning a solo Pokewalk at lunch but ran into my friend who was out doing the same thing. We wandered together and I taught her how battling gyms works. A good time was had!

Is anyone having any luck with the 'Nearby' screen?  It used to make sense and I could use it to hunt specific Pokemon but now all the Pokemon on that screen are 3 foot prints away, nothing 1 or 2 and it's not really showing the ones that actually show up.

This is bugged right now.  Lots of social media is saying so anyway.  I think everyone has the 3-step problem.

I checked it out in my neighborhood and it's pointing out common catches that I find in the usual spots. So seems pretty good.

 

Only problem is, it seems to only search a *very* small area around the map marker. So it takes like 10 separate searches to look at my whole usual pokewalk. A little annoying.

From what I've seen, it's reliable, but also considered cheating...not sure what the end result would be, but I like the chase so I'll ignore it myself. :-)

True.  I really enjoy the hunt too.. which is why I miss the what's nearby screen.

I think it's about as reliable as the pokemon servers are so.....

 

I like the hunt too, but it was a little informational and also disheartening to see how few pokemon spawn near my actual house. sadfaces.
