I watched The Man Who Invented Christmas and it has such an amazing and recognizable rendering of what the creative process is like, and how the characters come to be, and behave (and misbehave!). 

Five stars, highly recommend.

Here’s a few from my family’s folk-singalong book (we have a monthly gathering and the rule is, if a song is going to go in the book, you should be able to sing it unaccompanied while washing dishes).

A lot of Decemberists songs are quite singable too…if you want A Lot to memorize, The Mariner’s Revenge is fun and twisted and loooooong. 
 

 

Okay, the guitar is what makes this one magical, but it’s still a beautiful melody about changing seasons and their emotional resonance that comes out well with solo voice. 
 

 

These aren’t my words (I think the ones I know follow Vaughan Williams), but I love this song for being so wistful and yet happy.

 

Ghost story alert! The lover in this one died, probably of TB, hence coughing up “roses” of blood! Spooky! You’ll find a lot of modern singers r-e-a-l-l-y  d-r-a-g  this one oooooooout and it’s true that it’s a lot of fun to hold those beautiful long notes and add lots of ornaments, but I like this version with a bit of energy and flow. 
 

Another person with a lot of singable songs, but mostly focused on resource extraction in the late 19th through mid-20th C Americas. This is one of the ones I’m most likely to sing outside of singalong day, haha. 

 

 

Sea shanties are great! And here’s one that I think fits the mood of the songs you posted, another ghost story. 

 

 

I could go on! For example, how do you feel about other languages, particularly French? I picked up a vibe of wistful longing for another place and time, but I could share some more upbeat stuff too. Flirtatious? Cussing out folks who’ve done you wrong?  Do you love to really give ‘er  with some rocking high notes or prefer to keep things more in the middle?

Hey all! We are moving to a new hosting service for the forums this week. There will be a bit of downtime as we back-up the site and database and move to the new server. It's looking like Wednesday or Thursday when this will happen. I plan to hold off on the new challenge until we get to the new servers so we don't have downtime during the initial swarm of posting. If there is any change to the timeline I'll let you know!

Should be mostly transparent to everyone. We've been self hosting for years, but we are moving to the Invision's servers (the forum software this runs on).  Their hosting handles a lot of the back-end updates and I think we will be more stable generally (though we've had an awesome track record of stability self hosting as well). My hope is also that it will help with some of the security and reduce the spam and bots a bit.
